La Libertad Mine Community Fair
B2Gold Corp. Holds First Community Fair at La Libertad
B2Gold held an unprecedented event for a local population with strong mining traditions in the department of Chontales, Nicaragua: the First La Libertad Mine Community Fair. For two days, visitors had an opportunity to learn up close about the gold exploration and mining processes carried out by the company. “At B2Gold we implement a model of social responsibility in which the community is one of the most important beneficiaries of our activities,” said Omar Vega, manager of DESMINIC, the subsidiary that manages La Libertad Mine. “We believe that sharing what we do and how we do it in an open and transparent way is a fundamental part of our responsible mining operations.”
“This type of fair has never been implemented in the long mining history of Nicaragua,” said Carlos Barberena, Administrative Manager of B2Gold’s La Libertad Mine. “We want to show the population how a mine is operated in order to remove the taboo that exists around this economic activity, and to explain the procedure from exploration to the extraction of an ounce of gold.”
B2Gold also announced the donation of US$ 50,000 for the construction and equipping of a school cafeteria and construction of a perimeter wall at Las Brisas School in Managua. The Company estimates that the project will benefit some 600 primary students, reinforcing school security and providing an appropriate place for food services during the school day. According to B2Gold Country Manager Dale Craig, the project is executed in alliance with the Fabretto Children’s Foundation.
