FAQs

Will gold production and cost guidance for 2020 be affected by COVID-19?

B2Gold still expects to meet its 2020 gold production and cost guidance at all operations. See our August 5, 2020 news release for more details.

Have any B2Gold employees tested positive for COVID-19?

The Fekola Project in Mali announced its first positive case of COVID-19 on April 16, 2020. Despite operating on a significantly-reduced access basis since March 24, 2020, which only allowed minimal movement of personnel between Bamako and the Fekola site, an employee at the Fekola exploration camp, approximately 5 km from the Fekola Project, tested positive for the virus after starting to experience cold-like symptoms on April 12, 2020. The individual was immediately isolated and placed in quarantine at the Fekola exploration camp. The employee, who was in a stable condition and had moderate symptoms, was monitored by company doctors and the local Kéniéba Health Authority, and has since made a full recovery.

Since then, commencing on April 19, 2020, the site was on further lockdown and employees from local villages in the Fekola area were brought to live in temporary accommodation on site to create an "island setting" with minimal interaction with local communities. All employees entering the Fekola Project are now required to quarantine for a minimum of 12 days prior to entering the general site population.

Testing programs that are designed to identify asymptomatic carriers of COVID-19 and protect Fekola's employees (both site and Bamako-based), local community populations and the general Malian population have been implemented at the Fekola mine site, the Fekola exploration camp and in Bamako.

Despite these measures, one new positive COVID-19 case was identified on May 2, 2020. In accordance with standard protocol, contact tracing was completed and all persons known to have interacted with the person testing positive were immediately isolated and, based on their proximity to the positive case, were tested regardless of whether or not symptoms were present. Based on this proactive testing, an additional nine employees have now tested positive for COVID-19, although these individuals are currently asymptomatic. All persons testing positive have been removed from site and protective measures have been reinforced, working closely with site personnel, local communities, unions and the Government of Mali.

B2Gold places the safety and well-being of its workforce as the highest priority and continues to encourage input from all its stakeholders as the situation continues to evolve. The Company continues to monitor public and employee sentiment to ensure that stakeholders are in alignment with the continued operations at the mine.

What safety measures have B2Gold instituted at their various operations to protect against the spread of COVID-19?

B2Gold's COVID-19 response plan procedures continue to evolve in conjunction with guidelines from the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control as more becomes known about COVID-19. In addition, the Company is regularly monitoring the situation and following local and national health authority requirements and recommendations.

B2Gold has implemented several measures and introduced additional precautionary steps to manage and respond to the risks associated with COVID-19 to ensure the safety of B2Gold's employees, contractors, suppliers and surrounding communities in which the Company works while continuing to operate.

To date, the measures that B2Gold have implemented include monitoring the movement of people and goods; hygiene and cleanliness; social distancing and remote working; isolation procedures at B2Gold sites in the event of higher risk personnel; working with surrounding communities; and contingency plans for potential disruptions, including increases of supplies.

B2Gold is continually updating its plan and response measures based on the safety and wellbeing of its workforce, the severity of the pandemic in areas where it operates, global response measures, government restrictions and extensive community consultation. A critical care specialist has been consulting the Company to assist with developing guidelines as well as local and global implementation policies.

The Company continues to work closely with national and local authorities and monitor each site’s situation closely while ensuring the safe operation of its mines.

What protocols have B2Gold instituted to help prevent transmission to remote communities?

B2Gold continues to engage with local stakeholders to prevent the virus from entering the communities around its operations. Education programs are being put into place to protect the communities by promoting hygienic practices and limiting social interactions in an effort to prevent the spread of the virus.

Is mining an "essential industry"?

In all the countries in which B2Gold operates, mining has been declared an essential industry. B2Gold continues to update its plan and response measures based on the safety and wellbeing of its workforce, the severity of the pandemic in areas where it operates, global response measures, government restrictions and extensive community consultation. The Company is working closely with national and local authorities and continues to monitor each site's situation closely while ensuring the safe operation of its mines.

How is B2Gold giving back to support local communities in the countries in which it operates?
