The Future Is Local: Celebrating the Rise of Malian Leadership at B2Gold

October 14, 2025
At B2Gold's Fekola Mine in Mali, a new generation of local leaders is stepping into the spotlight. While the mine's early success relied on a largely international management team to establish world-class safety and operational standards, the focus has now shifted toward developing and empowering Malian talent through a structured Competency Transfer Program. This approach is already paying off. Five outstanding Malian professionals have recently advanced into key leadership roles - each bringing local expertise, fresh energy, and deep commitment to B2Gold's values of fairness, respect, transparency, and accountability. Their stories reflect not only personal achievement, but also the strength of B2Gold's long-term investment in people.

 Birama Cissé Country Manager, Mali

Since joining B2Gold Mali in 2015, Birama Cissé has played a pivotal role in the company's success from Fekola's groundbreaking and first gold pour to major executive visits and public events. Beginning as Head of Communications and Public Relations, he became the steady hand behind B2Gold's stakeholder relationships and public image. Now, as Country Manager, Birama oversees all national operations, uniting people, processes, and partnerships. His leadership reflects the impact of aligning local insight with global vision and the trust that comes from years of proven excellence.

Ibrahim Touré Resident Manager, Fekola Operations

Ibrahim Touré joined B2Gold in 2017 and quickly became known for his ability to bridge operations with community engagement. As External Relations Manager, he championed collaboration and built trust across host communities. Now, as Resident Manager, he is responsible for the daily operations of Fekola ensuring productivity, safety, and teamwork remain top priorities. His inclusive leadership style embodies B2Gold's belief that operational excellence and community trust go hand in hand.

Issa Diarra - Chief Financial Officer, Mali

Issa Diarra has been part of B2Gold since 2013 and is widely respected for his financial acumen and integrity. Starting as an Accountant Officer, he steadily advanced through roles that demanded precision, transparency, and accountability. As Chief Financial Officer, Issa now oversees the financial health of B2Gold Mali's operations, guiding strategy and ensuring compliance. His journey demonstrates how homegrown talent can lead with both skill and trust qualities essential to sustainable success.

Kamissa Traoré - Administration and Site Services Manager

When Kamissa Traoré joined B2Gold Mali in 2024 as Administration Manager, she became the first Malian woman to hold a managerial role at the Fekola Mine and she immediately made an impact. Her leadership reshaped site administration, travel, communications, and operations logistics, ensuring that every part of Fekola ran with greater efficiency and coordination. In April 2025, Kamissa expanded her portfolio to include Site Services, overseeing infrastructure, roads, and facilities management a role previously held by an expatriate. Her success represents more than personal growth; it underscores B2Gold's commitment to advancing gender inclusion and local leadership in mining.

Abdoulaye Aziz Kane Process Plant Manager

Abdoulaye Aziz Kane has been part of Fekola's story since its earliest days, helping to build and optimize the Process Plant from the ground up. Starting as a senior metallurgist and rising to Deputy Plant Manager, he has consistently driven improvements in performance and efficiency. Now, as Process Plant Manager, Abdoulaye becomes the first Malian to lead one of Fekola's core operational departments a historic milestone for both him and the company. His achievement exemplifies how technical skill, persistence, and leadership can redefine what's possible for local professionals in the mining industry.

A Shared Vision for the Future

Together, these leaders embody the power of opportunity, mentorship, and vision. Their success is not only personal - it's part of B2Gold's broader strategy to build capacity, transfer knowledge, and ensure that the future of Fekola is being forged by Malian hands. The rise of these talented individuals is a testament to what can happen when a company invests in people and partnerships that last. The future of B2Gold Mali is being shaped by those who know the land, understand the culture, and are ready to lead with integrity and pride.
