Employee Spotlight – Wally Porter

In this employee spotlight, we introduce you to Wally Porter, a haul truck operator who shares insights into his background, experience in the mining industry and life outside of work.

Employee Spotlight

Name: Wally Porter.

Where are you from? Gjoa Haven.

What is your current role? Haul truck operator.

Is this your first job in the mining industry? No. I have held many positions in the mining industry, including Site Services, core cutter and various equipment operator roles.

What did you do for work beforehand? My focus was on school and working in my community. I completed training and worked seasonally with the DEW Line (Distant Early Warning Line), a network of radar and communication sites across northern North America. I also worked for the Hamlet of Gjoa Haven.

What transferable skills do you think you learnt from those past jobs that you brought to B2Gold? Working with companies in the mining sector such as Nuna Group and Ledcor Group helped me understand daily operations, participate in safety meetings and train on various equipment. I learned how to safely and properly operate equipment and the importance of reliability and punctuality. I also worked for Northwestel for seven years, and online courses further prepared me for this role.

What do you like about your job? I enjoy meeting new people, working with coworkers and learning new skills. The role helps provide for my family. My interest in mining was inspired by my uncle, and I have now worked in the industry for nine years.

What opportunities or programs have you taken while working with B2Gold? CPR training while working in Exploration.

What do you do on your time off from work? I am currently studying at Arctic College to obtain my Grade 12 diploma. I enjoy spending time with my family, fishing and camping.

What is your advice to people who may want to get into the mining industry or work at B2Gold? Be prepared to spend time away from family, as rotations involve 12-hour days over three weeks. Support resources are available at B2Gold. Take any training opportunities you can, as there are many opportunities within the mining industry.
